International Programme in English - spring 2021

Cultural and Social Field Activities II (3 ECTS-Credits)

This course offers the chance to discover Salzburg and its surroundings. Excursions, outdoor activities, sightseeing and visits to theaters and museums will give an insight into the Austrian culture, traditions and values. Additionally, current social issues will be discussed in class. Personal impressions and reflections will be collected and then presented in a portfolio.

Insights into Salzburg's and Austria's history II (3 ECTS-Credits)

This course deals with the past and present of Salzburg, and will convey a basic understanding of the city's and province's historical developments, while also considering the broader context of Austrian and European history. Topics such as poverty, tourism, Catholicism and First and Second World War will be covered in this class.

Challenges and Perspectives of European Educational Systems II (3 ECTS-Credits)

The aim is to examine and reflect upon the processes of globalization and European integration, affecting schools and universities. An overview of the Austrian curriculum, characteristics of Austrian schools, historical factors, and other information about Austrian society in relation to the Austrian system of education will be presented. The cultural background of the participants will be a vital resource for cross-cultural discussions and comparisons of the national educational systems.

Discovering Austria beyond the clichés II (3 ECTS-Credits)

The famous American movie “The Sound of Music”, shot in Salzburg in 1965, is the starting point to discover the city of Salzburg and its rich and unique surroundings. The course provides a deeper understanding and appreciation of Austria and its main geografical, traditional, artistic aspects and an introduction to its political, intellectual and cultural values.

German as a Foreign Language - Deutsch als Fremdsprache 1 + 2 (4 ECTS-Credits)

In accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) Language acquisition - Level A1:

  • can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases
    aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type
  • can introduce himself:herself and others and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where he:she lives, people he:she knows and things he:she has
  • can interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and
    clearly and is prepared to help
  • basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment
  • aspects of his or her background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need
  • environment and daily life in Salzburg
  • school, work, leisure

German as a Foreign Language - Deutsch als Fremdsprache 3 + 4 (4 ECTS-Credits)

In accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) Language acquisition - Level A2 (B1)

  • basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment
  • aspects of his:her background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need
  • environment and daily life in Salzburg
  • school, work, leisure

School Placements for Student Teachers (3 ECTS-Credits)

Students will be based at local pre-primary schools, primary schools or lower secondary schools on a one day a week basis, they will work as classroom assistants with the classroom teacher.

Instrumental Music Instruction - guitar (1 ECTS-Credit)

Through playing music students will experience a range of musical diversity and develop an understanding for different intercultural communication and value structures.

Instrumental Music Instruction - piano (1 ECTS-Credit)

Through playing music students will experience a range of musical diversity and develop an understanding for different intercultural communication and value structures.

International Project Management II (3 ECTS-Credits) 

In order to meet the requirements of the course students implement a working methodology according to the international standards of project management. Open Learning Methods are used to implement educational projects in schools.

Intercultural Competences in the Education Context (3 ECTS-Credits)

The aim of this course is to introduce students to various notions of culture and explore the interdisciplinary fields involved in the subject. An overview of models of intercultural competence in the education context will be given and their strengths and weaknesses as well as implications will be discussed. Based on this theoretical background, methods of cultural training will be examined. The cultural backgrounds of the participants will then become a vital resource for cross-cultural discussions of personal intercultural encounters.

English as a foreign language - approaching B2 (3 ECTS-Credits)

Participants will mainly work on their speaking skills, which are trained by means of tasks such as presentations, group discussions, debates, roleplays, simulations or interviews. The course will cover various topics, with the aim to increase participants' vocabulary range. Participants will be expected to prepare for each session, and therefore regular homework assignments will be given. 

Voice training for teachers (1 ECTS-Credits)

How to make the most of my voice. The fundaments of a healthy and effectice vocal technique such as posture and breathing will be introduced and trained. An effective vocal warm-up routine will be practised with special emphasis on how to take care of the voice in order to keep it healthy. In addition the students will work on songs in various styles and from different countries. They will learn how to sing with consistent, accurate intonation and in harmony.

Teaching and learning all about money, trading and economics (3 ECTS-Credits)

Where does money come from? How do we earn it and how do we spend it? Can money be invisible? Do we really need everything that we buy? How are different items produced?

Economics is an important topic in our everyday life. The students of that course will find out how to arouse interest and accomplish curiosity in these topics with various teaching methods. Additionally, excursions to Austrian companies will give an insight into the culture, production processes and key characteristics of organisations.

The curriculum of primary and secondary schools in the area of economics of various countries will be analysed.

English Language Teaching Across Disciplines: World Literature (3 ECTS-Credits, blended learning course)

English Language Teaching Across Disciplines - World Literature is a course that invites PHS students and international students to become part of an online learning community designed by the course instructor. In this course students go on a literary and cultural journey through a collection of narratives across the world. Through close readings, discussions, presentations and writing tasks, the course helps students gain an understanding and appreciation of literature in general and of the selected authors’ countries, their histories and cultures in particular. By engaging critically with the texts chosen, students explore, demonstrate and discuss how authors from other countries reflect their world through their own unique, authorial and artistic modes and how their works can contribute to contemporary global cultural landscape. The course also encourages students to reflect on how studying fiction can help them as both university students and world citizens.

IMPORTANT

ECTS credits can be obtained within the regular curriculum which also offers possibilities for non German speakers. Courses can be chosen with the help of our International Office (from our English Department, Art/Handicraft/Music Workshops, Sports, etc.).

Grading

1

„Excellent“

= an outstanding performance

2

„Good“

= above the average standard but with some errors

3

„Satisfactory“

= generally sound work with a number of notable errors 

4

„Sufficient“

= performance meets the minimum requirements

5

„Insufficient“

= some more work required before the credit can be         awarded

According to the Universities Act 2005 two additional grades: "successfully completed" / "not completed" are admissible when established in the respective study programme in force.
